John D commented on Shopify Payments problem with SSN

Hi all!

My name is John and I'm a Guru here at Shopify!

As stated earlier in this thread; it would be necessary to prove your United States citizenship in order to apply to use Shopify Payments there.

If you are not a US citizen you can still apply to use any of the other gateways available in the USA to take payments in your store.

Some of these gateways will be direct, meaning they are fully integrated to your Shopify checkout and customers do not navigate away from Shopify when paying.

Others will be indirect, or external; meaning the payment gateway opens in a new window where the customer makes their payment.

You can see a partial list of direct vs external gateways here though to be completely certain of how a given gateway works you would need to reach out to the specific company running that gateway. :)

Best of luck with everything here!

Regards,
John

Hi there Benjamin!

My name is John and I'm a Guru here at Shopify!

While it would be best to wait for any response from PayPal on how their gateway works, I might be able to provide some info to help you out.

I have seen from previous experience that there are countries like yours where PayPal will allow you to send money to the account with them but not to pay out to your bank account there.

In these countries, some merchants have been able to work around PayPal's restriction by having a bank account in a supported third country attached to their PayPal account.

So if you can find a country where PayPal is able to pay out to you, you could send money to PayPal from your Ugandan store and have them pay out to your foreign bank account.

This is not ideal obviously, and you would need to talk to PayPal about which countries they would be able to pay out to, we just want to give you as much info to work from here as possible. :)

Best of luck with everything here!

Regards,
John

Clearing out the Safari history on iOS fixed this for me. Don't how it started or if new visitors are seeing it?

Has anyone raised a ticket with Shopify regarding it?

I did Matt - the response was to:

Let your customer's know to disable Apple's Cross Domain Cookie settings.

Not really an option..

Thanks for the clear history fix - I will test that out

Hey Mark,

Have you considered using another carrier for your shipments? We just partnered with eShipper who is a negotiated rates provider, so I encourage you to sign up - it's a free service and you're only charged if you actually make your shipments through them (since they're your rates provider instead of the post office/Shopify). After you sign up, you can enter your "ship from" and "ship to", along with the shipment dimensions and compare rates from all available carriers for that shipment. I actually spent my day at their offices yesterday, and they're all sincerely nice people who are great to work with :)

We've had mixed reviews about USPS from our Intuitive Shipping users - some of them have issues like you have, where packages are lost, delayed or damaged, but other merchants have had no problems in the 10+ years they've been using them. It could entirely be due to where you're located - I know I try to avoid the UPS depot by my house because the man who works there is absolutely miserable, but a city over they're always chipper and amazing.

Best regards,
Sharon

Hey there,

At this time, I'm afraid there isn't another way around this, but thanks for the feedback! I'd love to send this to our team so that we can see if there's anything we can change about our payment methods in the future. Just so I have all the details, can you tell me what country you're located in?

Have a great one,
Ann

Thanks John,

So if it wasn't for Paypal restricted service, I'd be able to receive Shopify payments on my Paypal account. Well Stripe is also not avilable and the Atlas progrem is far out of reach. I'll see what to do.

Limit Number of Gift Cards at Checkout by CRGGR

Hey all, I am a developer working with a client using Shopify Plus. Right now we are looking to limit the amount of gift cards used at checkout, to only 3 per transaction. Not up for much discussion on that, that is just how it has to be.

I have done whatever google searches I can to help me out along with reading all the related documentation I can find. Has anyone had success with limited the amount of gift cards a user can use during payment?

FBA by Amazon and Pre-Order by Kate Sheets

We are a new company in the process of manufacturing our first product.  I am wondering if a combination of Shopify, Amazon Fulfillment (FBA) and a Pre-Order app will allow me to do the following:

1. Pre-sell a select number of units in May.

2. Authorize payment for those orders at time order is placed (in May) but wait until we are ready to ship to charge the customer (in July).

3. Units shipped directly to Amazon (in June/July).

4. Add Amazon fulfillment as the drop-shipper in Shopify (in June/July).

5. Fulfill Pre-Orders through Amazon in July <-- This is the point at which the user's credit card would be charged.

Any info or advice on the best way to do this is much appreciated!

Hi Clark, in addition to what Ann mentioned, a few things you can do to increase the security of your store is to:

1. Ensure that your customer enters their CCV as well as their Zip code properly. This can usually be achieved through your payment provider settings

2. Highly recommend installing "Fraud Scanner" so fraudulant orders are automatically cancelled so you don't have to worry about fulfilling them: https://apps.shopify.com/fraud-alert-cancellation

Hi Sonia,

Firstly, you’re on the right track. There are definitely options in fulfillment companies, and I thank you for reaching out to us and being up front with your questions.

You took the first step: knowing your company’s needs, and asking your potential fulfillment partners directly. Reviews and referrals are important too. A history for at least a few years of innovating in this industry means you are working with a reputable company that puts its customers first.

As a business owner, here are a few things to consider:

1. Smoothness of operations: how busy do you have to be with fulfillment vs. spending your time running your business?

2. Transparency: are there hidden costs, upgrades you “need” to sign up for, and caveats in the actual delivery process?

3. Scalability: Are there financial incentives for increasing your business, and how seamlessly will your fulfillment partner handle increased shipments and deliveries?

4. Cost: can I be sure I am getting a fair rate and I understand exactly what I am paying for? Am I paying for services I don’t need? What will my cost structure be like as my business slows or increases?

Ultimately, you need to think from the perspective of your own customer: Will she receive the right products, professionally delivered, on time, at a fair cost, each and every time? If you think the fulfillment company is providing that service, they are usually the kind of company that gets you and with whom you have the best shot at successfully growing your business.

Sincerely,
Joe Brieger

Hi, Dilek!

Freddie here from the Shopify Support team, thanks for reaching out.

If you haven't already, have you checked into this help document here that outlines the step-by-step instructions on how to successfully process a test transaction with Shopify Payments? If not, please do give it a read through, as it has all of the information you need on getting this set up and working! You'll need to first make sure that Test Mode is enabled, and you're using the test card numbers that are listed on that document there as well.

If you've gone through that and you're still experiencing troubles, which exact error are you experiencing when you're trying to put through a test order? Feel free to let me know any more information you have on the troubles you're having, so I can be sure to get you the right information!

I do hope this helps!

Cheers,

Freddie

USPS is very popular among ecommerce merchants because they typically have the lowest rates for domestic shipments compared to other carriers. They also offer shipping insurance for certain classes of parcels (Priority etc). Do you mind sharing more details on this problem? Are you shipping domestic mostly? Are you shipping First Class or Priority?

if using Shopify payments, are there separate fees owed to Paypal for Paypal Express, Amazon for Amazon Pay, Apple for Apple Pay by Blair Jeffris

We plan to use Shopify payments. We would also like to offer Paypal Express, Amazon Pay, and Apple Pay. I read that Shopify doesn't charge any extra fees for these additional payment options if we are using Shopify Payments. In our situation, are there separate fees owed to Paypal for Paypal Express, Amazon for Amazon Pay, Apple for Apple Pay?

I've read documentation on Shopify and Paypal and can't find an answer.

Hi there Blair!

My name is John and I'm a Guru here at Shopify!

I've been looking into your query here to hopefully shed some light on the use of these payment methods on your site. :)

For the use of Apple Pay, there are no extra fees as per that guide doc. :)

When using Amazon Pay, there would be fees charged by Amazon per their own policies.

Similarly, PayPal charges their own fees for processing payments; though for all of the above gateways if you also have Shopify Payments in place you would not also pay transaction fees; just the fees to gateways payable as above. :)

To be certain of any rates and policies of external companies like this we would always advise reaching out to the gateway directly to confirm these details.

Best of luck with everything here!

John

John D commented on Limit Number of Gift Cards at Checkout

Hi there!

My name is John and I'm a Guru here at Shopify!

Thanks for taking the time to post your query here on our merchant forums.

This might be possible on Shopify Plus by using a specific script to control the number of gift cards used here.

You could have your client contact their MSM to work with our Plus team on creating and implementing a script to put this in place.

If you'd like, you or your client can email into support@shopify.com from an email address on the Plus account so we can look into this for you.

If you pop the ticket number for your contact into a reply here I could even grab it from the queue for you and have this investigated and escalated as appropriate. :)

Best of luck with everything here!

John

I realise you've said that the limit is not up for much discussion, but limiting gift card usage could have some serious legal implications. Stopping a customer from using a gift card could be very well be illegal in your region. You will want to be very sure that you're not putting your client at risk.

Since this is a Plus merchant you will have access to checkout.liquid. The checkout object has properties like this:

https://help.shopify.com/themes/liquid/objects/checkout#checkout-applied_gift_cards

So assuming you made the customer enter the gift cards in an early step you could use the data in that to effectively stop the checkout from being able to proceed if 3 cards have been applied.

You'd also want to run some JavaScript that tracks how many cards are applied since the card applying process is done with AJAX. This will help add a safety net and give you a chance to show a pretty message.

I would not however recommend this idea at all. I can't stress that enough. If someone has a valid gift card, let them use it. As noted above, this merchant will have a merchant success manager assigned on Shopify side - they should talk to them about this strategy.

John, thanks for your quick reply. I think I've got it but will give an example to be clear:

We are on the Shopify Plan and using Shopify Payments, so our Shopify Payments transaction fee is 2.6% + $.30 per transaction.

If we enable Paypal Express, we pay fees to Paypal in accordance witht their terms. Let's assume the fee to Paypal is 2.9% + $.30 per transaction https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/express-checkout.

In our situation, if a customer makes a purchase using Paypal Express, do we pay the Shopify Payments transaction fee (2.6% + $.30) in addition to the Paypal fee?
