Just noticed this today. It's because we don't have shipping rates set for higher weights as I understand it. Problem is, we were completely unaware of this situation happening on shopify. Shopify instead relies on the customer to contact the merchant via a link. Which I assume most of them will not do.
What I would recommend is first is automatically emailing the shop owner should this "error" happen, so that they can resolve the issue once it first arrises.
Second I would recommend showing some kind of warning in abandoned carts. Currently they look like any other cart.
Third I would recommend that these get tracked in Google Analytics as events.
Currently Shopify is sending nothing to the store owner, so I'm glad I caught this myself. I wonder how many other stores are losing sales because they haven't found this problem themselves yet.
